Inclusive practices that win will beget more inclusion

·1 min

Charity Majors takes on the recent rollbacks of DEI policies at major companies, writing that Corporate “DEI” is an imperfect vehicle for deeply meaningful ideals.

Charity considers that in the companies rolling back DEI programs might not have been deeply bought into the idea of improving outcomes through reduction in bias. Instead of being sad, she argues that we should show the value of inclusion and bias-reduction in corporate results.

If you want to do something different, you need to succeed. People cargo cult the culture of places that make lots of money.

If you want your values and ideals to spread throughout the industry, the most impactful thing you can possibly do is win.

If you believe in the value of inclusion, you don’t need a corporate DEI officer driving special DEI programs.

You need a set of operating practices and principles that are internally consistent and authentic to who you are. And you need to do the work to bring people along with you, hearts and minds and all.

Then, you can get out there and talk about your work and why you believe your values led to your success. And maybe people will listen.
